FAQs

  • As a self taught artist, I pulled much of my inspiration from the picture books that filled my childhood. I grew to understand many of the techniques and methods I use in illustration today by simply immersing myself in imagery that felt enchanting. The mediums that I use are primarily watercolors, ink, and pencil. Overtime, I’ve developed my own style and process of layering mixed media that is a little different than some traditional techniques. My preference with watercolors is to layer with my darker colors first while gradually pulling in my lighter tones and highlights as I paint. If you’re familiar with how watercolors work, then you might be asking if it wouldn’t be easier to do the opposite by starting with your highlights and finishing with your shadows. Years ago, when I bought my first watercolor pad and brushes, I happened to be highly inspired by oil painting. Strangely enough, that ended up having an impact on my learning process and I developed the layering techniques that you would have as if you were oil painting. Dark, moody backgrounds are my specialty and nothing satisfies me more than the challenge of creating depth and perspective with these mediums. I have painted with oil paints many times before, but for me I just couldn’t seem to find the same attention to detail and old illustration feel that watercolors have to offer. It’s a fun story! If you follow me on Instagram, then you’ll probably catch glimpses of my behind the scenes process from time to time.

  • At this time, I am booked through the next year for accepting any new projects for book illustration. However, I am currently open for small private commissions that you can read about below in the next dropbox.

  • Yes, I am currently open for private work. A commission is an investment in something truly special and personal, for several years I’ve enjoyed meeting and working with my clients and helping to create sentimental gifts, business logos, or even concept art for a bigger project. If are interested in collaborating with me for an illustration you have in mind, I would love to hear from you. The best way to contact me is through email at aslandominique@gmail.com

Please note, if you have a deadline for when you would like to see a commission finished, my time table for completing work can sometimes take up to two plus months depending on the complexity and open slots I have available for new clients.
